This is an assignment for illustration class. Its an illo inspired by the Langston Hughes poem, “Catch.” The only rule was that we had to use a color palate that exists in an Aaron Douglas painting. Douglas was probably the most well known artist from the Harlem Renaissance, and he worked with Langston Hughes illustrating MANY of his poems.
We actually went on a little field-trip to Fisk University to check out a mural that Mr Douglas painted himself (The photo is a candid shot of the mural with me, Thanks Jill!).
The Cover, is for Poetry Magazine.
This project was particularly fun for me for several reasons: 1) I consider Aaron Douglas to be one of my biggest influences, and I get to work the same way he did for a school project. 2) Its Black History month, and we are working with two of the biggest names in Poetry and Painting by black people. 3) The format and feel of the magazine is exactly one of the kinds of things I want to do with my career.
I loved this project, and I’m happy with the end result. I did a second version of the cover, which I’ll get on here as soon.
